VARICOSE VEINS VS SPIDER VEINS

The first step in treating your specific vein disorder is to determine whether you experience varicose veins or spider veins. The two conditions share similar causes and risk factors, but have different appearance and symptoms. While the following guide clarifies some of the most significant differences between the two vein disorders, scheduling a free consultation at Pacific Med Health Group offers the most reliable way to ascertain whether you should be treated for varicose or spider veins.

Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins commonly appear just beneath the skin surface as enlarged dark blue or purple vessels. They are usually larger than spider veins and appear raised on the skin.

Varicose Veins Symptoms

  •  Misshapen, raised, enlarged veins
  • Leg fatigue
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration
  • Itching
  • Aching
  • Burning sensation
  • Night cramps
  • Restless legs
  • Bleeding from varicose veins
  • Tenderness to the touch

Spider Veins

As opposed to enlarged and bulging varicose veins, spider veins are typically smaller and not as painful. They commonly manifest  below the surface of the skin as the web of red or blue veins.

Spider Veins Symptoms

  • Web-like appearance of the veins
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Aching
  • Discoloration
  • Cramping
  • Restless legs
  • Skin ulcers
  • Bleeding from spider veins
  • Tenderness to the touch

COMMON CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS

Causes of both varicose and spider veins include the following:

  • Age
  • Biological sex
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Family history
  • Sedentary lifestyle

DIAGNOSING VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS

Candidates for varicose or spider vein procedures must be properly diagnosed prior to treatment. This requires a thorough physical examination during which one of our specialists will assess your veins while you’re in the upright position to check for swelling.

While our specialists can determine the nature of your specific vein disorder by examining the appearance of your affected veins, an ultrasound test may be necessary to ascertain that the vein valves are functioning properly. This test is noninvasive and involves running a small hand-held device against your skin to examine the affected veins.

At Pacific Med Health Group, our vein specialists are known to take time in the course of physical examination so as to better assess the affected areas in need of treatment. During the consultation, we will also help you choose the right kind of varicose or spider vein therapy most appropriate to treating your condition. We will then go over every step involved in the procedure to make sure you understand what to expect during treatment and recovery period.

VEIN TREATMENT OPTIONS

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment options will be discussed. If health-related concerns are causing varicose or spider veins, it is important to treat these conditions to prevent them from causing problem veins in the future. Whether your specific complaints have a purely cosmetic nature or point to more serious medical conditions, we offer a variety of advanced and non-invasive treatment options designed to alleviate your discomfort and deliver the most cosmetically appealing results.

VEIN TREATMENT RECOVERY

Varicose and spider vein treatments are clinically proven to be safe and require virtually no downtime.  After your procedure, you should be able to immediately resume your normal activities and return to work.

Certain treatments such as endovenous laser ablation and microphlebectomy will require you to wear special compression stockings immediately after the procedure. You will only need to wear them for approximately two weeks to ensure smooth recovery. Depending on your physician’s expert advice, you may not need to wear them at night.

For approximately 10 days after the procedure, you will be asked to do some light walking on flat surfaces for one to two hours daily to facilitate healing and prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs. While you will be discouraged from running and other forms of strenuous physical exercise, short walks are strongly recommended. During this period you should avoid sitting or standing still for long periods of time.

Varicose vein treatment is known to be well-tolerated and guaranteed to produce long-lasting results, bringing you self-confidence and satisfaction for years to come.

PREVENTING VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS

Even after the conclusion of your healing period, it is recommended that you adopt a more active lifestyle in order to prevent the formation of varicose and spider veins in the future.

  • Exercise: Regular exercise will keep your blood flowing, thereby diminishing the risk of vein-related disorders.
  • Healthy Diet: Maintaining a healthy diet and keeping your weight down will allow you to reduce pressure on the veins in your lower extremities.
  • Active Movement: If your work requires you to follow a largely sedentary lifestyle, you may want to follow specific exercises to lessen the pressure on your legs and prevent the formation of vein disorders. These include taking a brief walk every 30 minutes or periodically elevating your legs.

In the event your varicose or spider veins reemerge, you should not neglect your discomfort and see your physician to find an appropriate treatment for your condition.
