Weight Loss Surgery

Having excess body weight can severely limit your quality of life and may cause you serious health issues. Diet and exercise may help you to shed extra pounds, but many patients need additional help in order to accomplish their weight loss goals. Weight loss surgery can help you regain control over your body, lose extra pounds, and achieve a more slender figure.

Candidates for Weight Loss Surgery

Candidates for weight loss surgery should be at least 100 pounds or 100 percent above their ideal weight, have a BMI of 40 or above, or have a BMI of 35 or above with health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Weight Loss Surgery Options

At Pacific Med Health Group, we offer Gastric Balloon the adjustable gastric band (Lap Band Surgery) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) for qualified weight loss surgery candidates.

Weight Loss Surgery Option 1:  Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon (also known as endoscopic intragastric balloon) is a state-of-the-art technique that allows you to lose weight without surgically altering the anatomy of your stomach.

The Procedure

This procedure is specifically designed to “bridge the gap” between a dietary regimen and more invasive weight loss surgeries.  When placed into the stomach, the gastric balloon produces the effect of fullness, leading the patients to consume less food.  The device can be easily removed after a period of time, affording an extremely effective way to treat obesity without any surgery.

Recovery and Benefits

Everyone knows that an active lifestyle is the best and healthiest way to lose weight. In spite of this conventional wisdom, however, exercise and nutrition counseling sometimes fail to do the trick, necessitating more radical weight loss interventions. The gastric balloon is an advanced, temporary weight loss procedure that makes patients feel full sooner by placing a durable silicon balloon in the stomach. Following the procedure, the recovery process takes place on an outpatient basis with most patients being able to return home on the same day. In most cases, patients feel fully recovered and able to resume work in 3 days after the procedure.

Weight Loss Surgery Option 2: The Lap Band

The lap band is an adjustable band wrapped around your stomach that can help you control your food intake without surgically removing a portion of your stomach.

The Procedure

First, the surgeon will make small incisions in your abdomen. The surgeon will then laparoscopically implant the gastric band so that it is wrapped around the upper stomach. This will create a small pouch so that you will not be able to consume much food without feeling nauseated or having to vomit.

Recovery and Benefits

Lap band surgery may lead you to lose a significant amount of weight, which could improve your health, enhance your quality of life, and increase your longevity. Compared to gastric bypass surgery, lap band surgery is short, has a far shorter recovery period, causes less pain and discomfort, and is less invasive. The likelihood of complications is also lower, and scarring is less noticeable. In addition, the procedure is reversible; if you no longer wish to have the band, it can be removed.

Weight Loss Surgery Option 3: Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve procedure surgically removes a portion of the stomach so that you are less hungry, feel fuller sooner, take in fewer calories, and lose weight.

The Procedure

After making several small incisions in the abdomen, the surgeon will inflate the stomach with CO₂ gas and work to remove a portion of it to create a smaller, sleeve-like stomach. The result is a smaller stomach that is roughly the shape and size of a banana.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Recovery and Benefits

Immediately after surgery, patients must maintain a liquid diet and then transition to a pureed diet as the stomach heals. Within several weeks, patients are usually able to transition to eating three small meals per day. Most patients can return to normal activity levels within two weeks and feel fully recovered within three weeks. With your stomach size reduced, you will feel full after eating less, consume fewer calories, and lose weight. Another benefit is that the procedure removes the portion of the stomach that produces a specific hormone that makes you feel hungry, which means you will feel less hungry. It is an excellent alternative to gastric banding or full gastric bypass, and it has fewer complications than either of these procedures. Gastric sleeve surgery can even lead to the same amount of weight loss as gastric bypass surgery.

Actual Patients. Dramatic Results. Before & After Photos

Weight loss surgery can dramatically improve your health. Many problems related to obesity tend to improve, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, asthma, orthopedic or joint problems, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and even urinary incontinence.

Many people notice that their bodies respond differently to certain foods after weight loss surgery. Some patients find that their bodies can no longer tolerate foods they used to eat regularly. Many others find that their bodies have difficulty absorbing nutrients such as iron, calcium, vitamin D, folate, and vitamin B-12. It is important to work with your surgeon and primary physician to monitor your health so that you can prevent or reduce vitamin deficiencies after weight loss surgery.

It may be difficult or impossible to avoid some level of skin sagging after massive weight loss. Toning exercises can help to reduce some skin sagging, but the skin will not be able to regain the strength and elasticity it had before the weight was gained. However, post-weight loss surgery can remove sagging skin to highlight the new body shape that you’ve fought hard to achieve.

The best and only real way to maintain your results from weight loss surgery is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Eat small meals that are high in protein, and prioritize your nutrition. Exercise daily so that you burn calories and keep your resting metabolic rate high. If you are not used to exercising, start with light activities such as daily walking and build up to longer, more intense cardio and strength training sessions. As you make exercise and healthy eating your new permanent lifestyle, it will become easier and more natural for you to maintain.
