Sclerotherapy Pomona | Beverly Hills CALiving in Southern California, we’re always in shorts and sundresses, swimsuits and sandals. And the last things we want anyone to see are small networks of squiggly red, blue, and purple lines on our legs — spider veins. While spider veins are fine on Spiderman, they have no business on your legs!

At PacificMed Health Group, we feel sclerotherapy is still the best solution for getting rid of annoying spider veins.

Why do I have spider veins?

The veins are the highways for the de-oxygenated blood to return to the heart. But in the legs, it’s an uphill slog, fighting gravity the whole way. Plus, as we age, our muscles and tissues surrounding the veins (which all work as a team to help push the blood through the veins) weaken, so they don’t help to push the blood as well. The combination can allow blood to pool in certain veins. While this is the cause of varicose veins, some spider veins form this way as well.

Most spider veins, however, form for a variety of reasons. They are a part of typical aging. But they also form with pregnancy, weight gain and loss, hormonal changes, and occupations that require prolonged sitting or standing.

Sclerotherapy to the rescue

Other than being a good word for Scrabble, sclerotherapy is still the most effective method for removing spider veins from your legs. Sclerotherapy had its origins way back in 1930, but our PacificMed providers still solve spider veins with this procedure. It is more effective for spider veins than lasers or IPL treatments.

Sclerotherapy involves the use of a saline solution. This solution is injected with a very thin needle directly into the unwanted spider vein. Once injected, the saline irritates the vein wall causing it to collapse. Any blood that was in the vein is instantly re-routed to an adjacent vein. The injection immediately minimizes the appearance of the spider vein, but then the body goes about the job of scavenging the unused vein, eventually absorbing it. The vein is now totally gone, as are your inhibitions about wearing that swimsuit!

Is there recovery with sclerotherapy?

After your treatment, you may have some slight bruising at the injection sites for a couple of days. If you’ve had a number or veins treated, we’ll put you in a pair of compression stockings. The pressure on the legs minimizes any swelling and helps the legs begin absorbing the veins. With compression stockings, most veins will vanish with just a single injection.
